And Now, To Call Even More Attention To Those Who Don't Need It...

We, as a nation, have a problem getting our priorities straight. It seems like all you can find on TV is the latest news out of hollywood...the get-togethers, the breakups, happy stories of success, heartbreaking stories of the price of that success, and so on. I don't know about you, but to me this seems to be a huge waste of time. I mean, come on. Do I really need to know every minute detail of the Stars' sex lives??

I believe that we could better spend our time hearing of something that actually matters. Maybe part of the mess we are in now can be attributed to laziness on the part of the people of the United States. Maybe, if we got away from the pointless television we are so fond of, got off our lazy asses and actually did something for our community, country, or planet, we could actually make a difference.

You probably think I'm crazy right about now, and I know you all love your tv shows, but think of it this way: If every person in America turned off the tv for one hour and used that hour to benefit someone besides themselves, we would have donated about 304 million hours of labor. If each donated hour was figured to be worth at least minimum wage ($7.25/hour), we would donate over 2.2 billion dollars of work. Think of the improvement this could have on our communities. And what would we have lost? Possibly the knowledge of which stars have breast implants. Wait, you can see that again tomorrow night, so...NOTHING!

I believe that The United States became the great nation it is because of its people. Specifically, their ability to overcome in the face of hardship, the way they worked, and their willingness to help one another. I think we are currently lacking as a nation in those traits, and that is why we got into our current crisis. It is my belief that if we can come back to these core values, the United States will again become the leader it has been in the past. The first step is learning to care more about our neighbors than about the lives of the stars.

  1. i have to say you are making a good point. personally, i think that community service should be a required part of school (Mr. Smith's got a good idea going on...) so that students know what it's like to help others. (although i'll never volunteer at the nursing home EVER again. those old people are vicious!) it makes me kind of angry that tv shows that used to have a point are regressing...Oprah, for example. she used to talk about things that matter, but every show i've watched recently has been "Beauty Secrets!" or crap like that.

anyway, after making a nearly pointless comment that was simply agreeing with everything you said, i must get on to my Career Investigations project so that Mrs. S doesn't attempt to butchar me when she catches me doing what i'm not supposed to...
